Thursday evening will feature open house-style meet and greets with featured artists, refreshments, live music, and specials at various businesses in the historic districts of Gainesville. CLICK HERE TO SIGN UP! Limited capacity!

  • Workshops will simultaneously run from 5:30 pm-7:00 pm
  • Artists 15 years old or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian for the entirety of the workshop.
Workshop #1 En Plein Air at The Dragon in Roosevelt Square

Pack your bag and paint “en plein air” alongside artist Michael Mills, OPA 2024 Olmsted Georgia Color Best of Show Winner and local artist educators Veronica Martin and Laura Tucker. The workshop location will be around the city’s newest public artwork, The Dragon at Roosevelt Square!

This workshop requires that you bring your own supplies.

Recommended Supplies:
  • Foldable chair
  • Easel (if painting with acrylic or oil)
  • Sketchbook
  • Painting surface (if using an easel i.e. canvas or panel)
  • Paint palette
  • Art Media (watercolor, acrylic, oil paints or pastel, pens, pencil, etc.)
  • Water in a container (if painting in an aqueous media)
  • Painter’s rag or paper towels (to clean brushes)
Workshop #2 Graffiti Sculpture

Spray! Squirt! Toss! In true street art style, young artists will help transform the large, faded sculptures in the lawn of the Smithgall Arts Center by painting them with bold, bright colors. This workshop will be led by local artist educator, Sarah Claussen and the Gainesville High School National Art Honor Society.

This process lends itself to paint splatters.  Wear clothing and shoes that you would not be upset if paint stained.

How to Make the Most of your Art Walk Experience:

  • Where to Park and get started:
    • We recommend parking in the Main Street Parking Deck at 301 Main Street SW, right near stop #1 at Hunt Tower. Pick up an “Art Walk Guide” here and begin your tour around the Square, then hop on the Trolley to the final few locations!
  • How to get the Guide:
    • Pick up an “Art Walk Guide” handout on the Trolley, or at any of the stops, with a handy ‘check off as you go’ section to make sure you hit up all the spots!
    • You can also print your own 11×17 art walk guide at home!
    • You can also use our google map with your phone instead, on the website, below.
  • Does order matter?
    • No, but we’ve strategically ordered them for a great flow. Walk the first 17 stops Downtown, then hop on the Gainesville Trolley to the last few stops a littler further out from the Square! If you decide to start somewhere in the middle, just follow the numbers in a circular pattern for the quickest journey to all the stops.  (Once you get to #23, circle back to #1.)
  • What should I look for?
    • While some set ups might be outside, please note that many of the experiences are INSIDE buildings! This experience was crafted to get people inside places they don’t normally go!
    • Each Stop will have a yard sign with the # on it this year, to help you locate where to go.  Additional Trolley Signs will be noted for trolley pick up locations.
    • Check out nearby retail and restaurants as you walk around downtown and see what’s new!
    • The google map has extra notations, like public bathrooms, parking decks, and trolley driving routes.
